Time To Save A Life
Book Two
Prologue
Connie and I.
We are friends, colleagues and sisters.
We are so similar it is like we are twins, but we are also so different, it is a miracle that we are even friends.
Nobody can understand us, not even those who work side by side with us every day of the week. We are a true puzzle, a total mystery. And that is the way we like it.
Even I can’t even understand the relationship which we share.
We are both fighters, we stand up for what we believe is right. We never give up.
I remember the first time I ever saw her. I knew that we would have a very special relationship. She really is something else, wild, unpredictable, feisty, all like me yet at the same time manages to be cool, calm and collected. Connie is one of the most talented people you could ever meet, and was not likely to let you forget that fact.
Now, several year later I am fresh back from Kenya and am now a fully qualified Cardiothoracic Consultant working on Coral Ward in Queen Elizabeth s hospital in London.
It’s a brilliant job. I love it. It’s unbelievably rewarding helping others and saving so many lives every day. Best of all I am working alongside the best surgeon in the world who is world renowned for her skill- A certain Miss Connie Meeling. My Connie. It was the 21st of May when we both started working here, under very unusual circumstances.
It seems like another life time ago.
Anyway working on Coral, the Heart Ward, just so you know, are Me, Connie, Paul and also Jim, Sarah, and Edward, who are registrars (two positions under Consultant). As well as one of three F1’s who are on rotation.
Let me tell you a little about me and Connie, shall I? Yes? Okay then. Well, I am 5ft 6” tall with really long, blonde curly hair, which easily reaches my slim waist and big pale blue eyes, and a tiny snub nose. I’m still tanned from the three years I spent working out in Kenya, I only came back to England two months ago. I am quite emotional, but I have managed to keep that from coming into work with me, so far anyway. I adore music and usually have pop, or sometimes country music playing in my theatre. Many people call me a fiery character, which I would kinda agree with that, over the years I have had many disagreements with colleagues, all of which I have won. So believe me, you don’t want to get me angry!
I do tend to see the bright side of life. I’ve been through, and seen, lots of awful stuff in my time so I don’t have any time for moaners, I love life and will happily deal with anything it throws at me. Just as long as it doesn’t kill me, I will always love it. That’s one of the thing I do share with Connie; love of life.
Furthermore, when I love I do love with my whole heart.
I’m a black belt in judo and know loads of self defence.
I spend an hour riding my horse Parabella every single day. That is my time and my time only. I never let anyone come with me. Not even Connie.
I work really long days at the hospital and often come home feeling totally shattered, but this is my life.
Welcome to me.
Now for my adorable sister, the one and only Connie Meeling.
She is 5ft 8” with mid length reddish brown hair and pale grey eyes. She has fair skin with lots of freckles, which she hates with a passion, but I love them. Connie does have emotions, I think, it’s just they’re rarely seen. Me; well over time, I have learnt to read her like a book, even when she doesn’t want me to. Know her emotions as well as I know her. So, upside down, inside out and back to front. I know Connie better than I know myself.
Connie’s passion is dancing. She does it a lot in her spare time, which is pretty rare as she works long hours like me.
She is feisty and can cut you to the bone with some of the things she says in the heat of an argument. Some of it she will mean, some it is just the anger talking.
She loves purely for the pleasure of breaking them. She is quite cold hearted sometimes. Priding herself on being a heartbreaker, she has a list of guys she has hurt almost as long as her arm.
Connie is vulnerable though. She will probably kill me for telling you this but her biggest fear is failure. And it is her only weakness. That I know of anyway.
Now you know a little about us I will start telling you this story. Do enjoy.
We start this book on a typical day at the hospital Queen Elizabeth’s, where we both work. It starts on the 21st of June at 8:00 AM 2010, exactly two month after I joined.
